Sobre la redefinición del matrimonio (parte 3) / On the redefinition of marriage (part 3)

The movement in favor of homosexual unions has recently begun to equate itself with the Civil rights movement of the sixties. They claim that their fight for “equal rights” is very similar, if not of the same nature, than that of black people fighting for equality with white people. There are several profound differences between both movements that render that claim entirely false. White people in the United States actually did have more rights than black people. Segregation and other forms of discrimination because of the color of one’s skin were a real thing. It was something based entirely on an accidental (in the metaphysical sense of the word) attribute of human beings. That is, two individuals who possessed the same dignity were being treated as if they did not because of a secondary trait. With homosexual unions, it is completely different. Homosexuality cannot be equaled with the color of one’s skin and the reasons for that are quite obvious. Also, it is fallacious to sustain that homosexual persons have “fewer rights” than heterosexuals. Both homosexuals and heterosexuals do not have the right to marry someone of their same sex. Both have the right to marry someone of the opposite sex. There is no discrimination in the fact that homosexuals do not wish to exercise that right.

Therefore, the real struggle that homosexuals are fighting is not for equal rights (because they already have them), but for additional rights. They, of course, do not say this openly. It is more profitable to present themselves as victims than to admit wanting more than what everybody else has. We must denounce this from the very beginning so as not to fall into their trap of portraying whoever opposes them as insensitive to the weak. This is not the struggle of a weak group against the tyranny of the strong. The homosexual lobby is anything but weak. That is not, however, the issue I wish to address. The issue at hand is whether these new rights which homosexuals claim for themselves are rights at all. If they are so, then they should be accessible to every single person, not only to homosexuals.

To do this we must go back to the basic definitions. A right is something that belongs to a person or institution on the basis of justice. Justice means giving to each what is their due. Something that is often neglected is that rights also have limits to them precisely because of the same justice, that brought them into existence.  That is, they are limited because of what is due to other people’s dignity or to the common good of society. Rights cannot be seen without the responsibilities that they carry with them. The “right to marry” has the limits that enable he who exercises it to respect the dignity of the person and  to collaborate with the common good. It is also limited by the very nature of the marriage institution. We have seen before that marriage and homosexual unions are two distinct things. They cannot be considered equal because they are not equal. Doing so would go against justice. Marriage as an institution has a fundamental role in the common good of society and as such deserves a special protection. Altering it would imply an act of injustice that would affect not only the institution of marriage but also society. Since the role of the government is to protect the common good, it follows that it is its duty to defend marriage and avoid any action that could harm it.

With the good of society and the respect of others' dignity in mind, the right to marry has been limited in several ways. A man cannot be married to more than one woman at the same time; he cannot marry a minor or a close relative. The restriction that says that only people of the opposite sex can marry falls into this category of restrictions as well. The reason for its existence is the respect of human dignity.

However, many will argue that the right to marry anyone, regardless of their sex, is necessary in order to respect human dignity. This is false. It is false because human dignity itself must be founded on a true understanding of Man and an essential aspect of each individual is his or her sex. Reality proves to us that we are either male and female. It is not a question of whether a person “feels” like a man or “feels” like a woman. The differences between sexes are not a subjective thing, they are a concrete reality inscribed in our very bodies. A denial of this, which lies at the very core of the homosexual ideology, is simply a false doctrine. of what human beings are. False concepts of Man lead to the demand of false rights and this demand of non-existent rights is exactly what the homosexual ideology is based upon. Moreover, false doctrines inevitably lead to a corruption of social institutions and to a disregard for human dignity. The gravity of this particular ideology lies in the fact that it attacks the very nucleus of the family which is, in turn, the basic cell of society. It is like a cancer that by attacking the cells can destroy the entire body. This cancer is already in an advanced stage in the West. Hopefully, we will be able to eradicate it in time.

Sobre la redefinición del matrimonio (parte 2) / On the redefinition of marriage (part 2)

The second fallacy that we must deal with in the debate about the redefinition of marriage is one present in all discussions of serious moral issues. It is the fallacious conception of what the separation of Church and State should be. I should begin by stating that I do not want Church and State to be united again. That was extremely harmful for the Church, much more than it was for the State. The breaking down of Christendom during the Protestant Reformation was mainly due to the actions of many princes and kings who had absolute dominion over the Church in their lands. But that is a topic for some other time.

The separation of Church and State is no longer seen as a healthy separation of two distinct institutions, each of which has its own aims and which are supposed to work in collaboration. It is not even seen as a guarantee of religious freedom in societies where people of different faiths coexist. It is now used as a means of silencing believers. What we have seen in the current debate is really an act of intolerance against believers from those who demand tolerance for themselves. Wherever someone raises his voice against homosexual unions, he is immediately silenced by saying that that position is based on religious beliefs that should not be imposed on others, even while this minority is actively seeking to impose its views on everyone else. This has reached ridiculous proportions in Mexico, where the voicing of their opinions by bishops is treated, by pundits and politicians alike, as a threat to this almost sacred principle of separation. It is offensive to see so many politicians “defending the secular state” instead of working for the common good, which is what they are supposed to be doing. Priests and believers are being treated as second-class citizens, something which is clearly unconstitutional.

What is actually being implied here is that religious views have no place in society. It is being implied that religious beliefs have no content of truth in them. By some faulty reasoning, they sustain the idea that religious truths are not rational. This is clearly false and I have written about it before, as have done many brighter and more respectable minds. On this point, it is interesting to read what Jürgen Habermas (a German, non-Christian philosopher) has to say about it in The Dialectics of Secularization: “When secularized citizens act in their role as citizens of the state, they must not deny in principle that religious images of the world have the potential to express truth. Nor must they refuse their believing fellow citizens the right to make contributions in a religious language to public debates.” In An Awareness of what is Missing, he writes: “the liberal state must also expect its secular citizens, in exercising their role as citizens, not to treat religious expressions as simply irrational.” By rejecting the truths contained in religious teachings, we are abandoning centuries of human wisdom and experience. The narrow mind of our contemporaries does not allow them to see through the poetic language of religion and discover the truth that lies in it. With their militant secularism, they are robbing all society of these riches.

This rejection of religious language has not only impoverished the level of public debates, but it has collaborated in altering the meaning of the separation of Church and State even more. This separation has come to mean that religion is something limited to the private sphere, that should not be present outside of the temple or the home. Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver described it perfectly when differentiating between “freedom of worship” and “freedom of religion”. Freedom of religion “includes the right to preach, teach, assemble, organize, and to engage society and its issues publicly, both as individuals and joined together as communities of faith”, freedom of worship allows you to believe what you want as long as it is kept in private. The difference is evident.

By removing all references to religion in the public square, not only are believers being alienated, but the very core of our Western civilization is being destroyed. What we are witnessing today is not so much a separation of the Church and the State as it is a separation of the State and the culture. The values by which our societies have lived, grown and stayed together, our standards of right and wrong, our beliefs in what is true or untrue are all a product of this culture from which the State is now breaking away. In the West, this culture is a Christian culture. Once the State removes itself from the culture, it removes itself from those values and becomes the sole arbitrator of what is right and what is wrong, of what is true or untrue. Archbishop Chaput says: “A society where faith is prevented from vigorous public expression is a society that has fashioned the state into an idol. And when the state becomes an idol, men and women become the sacrificial offering.” And so, if the Supreme Court (based on ideology) votes that homosexual unions are the same thing as marriage then that becomes “truth”. Whoever opposes this is labeled as intolerant. How paradoxical it is that tolerance, the value that supporters of homosexual unions uphold as their banner, is the first Christian value that they dispose of once they have achieved their goal. I quote Archbishop Chaput once more: “The dogma of tolerance cannot tolerate the Church's belief that some ideas and behaviors should not be tolerated.” What Pope Benedict has called “the dictatorship of Relativism” is becoming more powerful by the day.

There is another fallacy which is used as a justification for homosexual unions being equated with marriage and in giving those unions the possibility of adopting children. It is the fallacy of declaring some things that are not rights, rights and, hence, considering any action against them as an act of repression. The only act of repression I see in the near future is the one the Church will have to suffer when the State decides to force it into celebrating the sacrament of marriage to homosexual couples. I know that many Christian sects will give in, the True Church will not.

Sobre la “redefinición” del matrimonio (parte 1) / On the “redefinition” of marriage (part 1)

Two events have taken place in the past week that have put the issue of the erroneously called homosexual marriages on the spotlight on both sides of the Mexican-American border. One is the recent vote in the Mexican Supreme Court declaring the constitutionality of homosexual unions; the other, is the repealing by a federal judge of Proposition 8, a proposition banning homosexual unions in the state of California and which was approved by popular vote.

This debate has brought forth several fallacies on which the whole homosexual ideology rests upon and if any serious discussion is to take place, they must first be addressed and taken out of the way. Since they are fallacious reasonings, they impede a truly rational debate to exist. Most defenders of traditional family and traditional values have failed in removing these obstacles and at times it seems like they are not even aware of them. They have allowed themselves to be pulled into a discussion where the meaning given to the terms used is not clear and where words are being manipulated in such a way that they make the defenders of homosexuality seem tolerant and rational and their opponents either crazy or stupid.

In order to explain why the redefinition of marriage is a fallacy, we must begin by clarifying what 'definition' means. The purpose of defining something is to state what that thing is. According to Aristotle, a definition consists of two parts: what we could call the “general category” (in Latin: genus proximus) to which the thing belongs to; and those characteristics that make it different from all the other things in that category (differentia specifica). Let me use the most common example, the definition of Man: man is a rational animal. Here, the general category is animal and what differentiates man from all other animals is the possession of reason. Defining is a discriminatory process in the sense of stating the differences between things. Without this discriminatory process, no rational thought is even possible. If all things are the same, then there is no possibility of reasoning. In this sense, saying that homosexual unions are different from marriage is discriminatory, but there is nothing wrong about it.

Basically, we can say that the whole point of defining something is to say what the thing is in reality, not what people want it to be, or what the majority decides it to be. This is done by distinguishing it from everything else. Therefore, a definition that does not correspond to reality is a false or incorrect definition, and a definition that fails to distinguish the thing defined from other things is a bad definition. The proposed “redefinition” of marriage is both a false and a bad definition. By giving the same name to two different things, it is making the term 'marriage' ambiguous, which is exactly the opposite of what a definition is meant to be.

In order to prove what I have just said, let us analyze the definition of marriage to see if homosexual unions can be defined in the same way or not. Both marriage and homosexual unions share a genus proximus, because they are both a form of human relationship. We can go further and accept that both of them are human relationships based on love since no one has ever denied that homosexual persons can love each other. But even this is still the genus proximus, as there are many kinds of human relationships based on love, many of which cannot be called marriage, take the relationship between brothers as an example. Up to this point we are yet lacking the differentia specifica for our definition.

Now, of all human relationships, there is one that exists to fulfill a basic necessity of mankind, that of the preservation of the species. This necessity, however, is not satisfied by mere reproduction, it also requires the protection and upbringing of children. The satisfaction of these needs demands a very specific form of relationship: a relationship of complementarity. This stems from the very obvious fact that reproduction can only take place between a man and a woman. The complementarity required for the raising of children is less evident, at least in appearance, but can be easily seen when one realizes that a man does not know (nor will he ever know) what it is like to be a woman. Therefore, he cannot teach a daughter how to be a woman as well as a woman would, nor can he teach a son many things about women that only a woman would know. The same principle applies for women with respect to men. This is something proven by experience and it is ridiculous to believe that scientific studies are needed to show such simple truth.

It turns out that it is exactly this relationship of complementarity that we call, and always have called, marriage. So now we have found the differentia specifica that we were looking for. Marriage is the human relationship of complementarity which enables us to form a family, the building block of society. In consequence, homosexual unions cannot be called marriage because they do not satisfy the differentia specifica, they are not relationships of complementarity. It does not matter how much two men or two women feel that they “were made for one another” or even how much they love each other, the fact that they share the same sex voids their relationship of this complementarity. Their very bodies deny it. This is something that either evolution, or random chance, or God, or whatever you want (for our purposes it does not matter who or what did it) has determined for us. It is not based on religious dogma but on the dogma of factual reality.

I have not had recourse to any Christian teachings in order to define marriage. I have only resorted to the doctrine of Aristotle (who lived many years before Christ), some common sense and logic to reach what is called the “traditional” definition of marriage. If the Catholic understanding of marriage coincides with the one I have offered it is because it is true and Revelation supports it by confirming it. Truth cannot contradict itself. Even when Christian principles are not used, a defense of marriage will be accused of being an imposition of religious views. In our so-called democratic societies (which are less democratic by the minute) this is considered an attack on the separation of Church and State. That is the second fallacy that I will deal with.

¿Qué significa 'Hispano'? / What does 'Hispanic' mean?

To an outsider as myself, Americans seem obsessed with their heritage. To the question “what are you?”, which, to be metaphysically correct, one should respond: “a rational animal”, followed by a look of confusion as to why anyone would ever ask that, they reply with the nationality of their ancestors. I do not know the reason for this, perhaps it is due to the fact that the United States is a country of immigrants from countries of strong nationalism, such as Ireland, Poland, Italy or Germany. I do not judge it to be wrong, I simply find it amusing. Some people take this whole ancestry thing to a whole new level: “I am one eighth Cherokee, one quarter Russian, one half Jewish and an eighth French”. The best answers are always the ones that do not even add up to one, but I guess a person's heritage is not to blame for bad arithmetic.

Now, when this question is presented to me, I reply that I am Mexican. This always seems to leave people unsatisfied. After hearing that, they proceed to inquire into my family history in order to determine my heritage. This usually ends in frustration because not even I know what my heritage, in the sense in which the word is used, is. I know that part of my family has been coming and going between Spain and Mexico and that is about it. I cannot tell you what percentage of what indigenous tribe I have, or what proportion of me is from Spain (maybe my leg is Spanish and one of my arms Aztec or Mayan?). I hold to this day that I am one hundred per cent Mexican. So, in the end, I am always thrown into the category of 'Hispanic'.

I have nothing against the term 'Hispanic'. As a matter of fact, I proudly embrace it because that is exactly how I would define myself. However, this term is, at least in the United States, used in an undefined and ambiguous way. I do not think it wrong for grouping people of different nationalities together. All Spanish Americans (by this I mean people from the Spanish-speaking countries) have, hidden somewhere in their subconsciousness, a vague memory, nowadays perhaps only an echo, of the days when we were one people; of when we belonged to something greater than our modern independent nations: when we were part of a family of nations. We all have a yearning for that long lost unity. And so, being lumped together with other Latin Americans is not the cause of confusion in the term 'Hispanic'. The problem begins when it is used to designate people who, though descendants of Spanish speakers, and sometimes even Spanish speakers themselves, do not participate in the common culture of Hispanity. Hispanity is a culture, that is, a world view; a set of customs, values, beliefs and ideas; “a representation of the world and of man, an estimation of life and death” (as Alfonso Reyes put it); that was originated in Spain and which was enriched by the fusion of the Spanish and the indigenous peoples. In the words of Efraín González Luna: “Hispanity is a living treasure of spiritual values […]; a supranational consortium bound together by a triple bond: a spiritual lineage, a historical community and a racial kinship […]; it is an organism of culture formed by Spain and the American nations that were born from it”. Because of the historical conditions in which it was born, this culture is, of necessity, a Catholic culture. It was born in Catholic Spain and, as a Catholic culture, was transmitted to the people of the New Continent. In order to be truly Hispanic, one must be part of this culture.

At times it seems like people are ashamed of their Hispanic heritage. Our countries are seen as poor and underdeveloped and our people as ignorant and not civilized. Sociologists and Historians blame Catholicism for impeding the modernization of our nations. They are right. Catholicism was and will remain the main obstacle for Hispanity to yield before Modernism. There is nothing wrong with that. Modernism is not the same thing as economic and social progress, as a matter of fact, the acceptance of Modernist thesis seems to be one of the main causes of our underdevelopment. While Catholicism has existed for two thousand years, Modernism has already become exhausted and given way to Post-modernism. The conflict will continue because, to accept Post-modernism, with its world views and ideas, with its beliefs and values (or should I say lack of values?) we would have to betray our very essence. We would have to cut off our Catholic roots. And all this for what? For a culture where Human Dignity is not respected, where money and profit are the supreme values, where materialism reigns over the lives of many and where rational thought has been abandoned into the hands of Relativism? It would be insanity to do this!

It is understandable why we would prefer to hold on to the tradition that began with the conversion of the Visigoths to Catholicism and their mixture with the Latin inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula. The one that was almost destroyed by the Mahometans but which began the fight for reconquest with Don Pelayo and a few men in Covadonga, and which heroically struggled for eight centuries in a Crusade by which the Cross overcame the Crescent. While the rest of European Christendom was giving in to the skepticism of the Renaissance and breaking apart with the Protestant Reformation, Spain was unified and, experienced with eight hundred years of combat, kept both Protestants and Muslims at bay. At the same time at which it was destroying the Turkish fleet in Lepanto and leading the efforts of the Counter-Reformation, it was also colonizing and evangelizing a whole continent. This period, which Efraín González rightly praises by calling “an authentic Spring of Christian culture” can be best described with his own words: “There has never been, in the history of the world, an example that could surpass, there is not even one that could be comparable to, the practical realization of the Christian thesis of radical equality of the species that took place in America, and which had Spain and the indigenous peoples as protagonists”. Many have ever since tried to remove the Catholic element from the Hispanic nations, with varying degrees of success. And yet, even after centuries of attacks (and even open persecutions, like those of the twentieth century) against the Church, it has remained as the firm root of our culture. In our heritage are also included all the brave martyrs who gave their life for the Faith and who preferred to die yelling “¡Viva Cristo Rey!” (“Long live Christ the King!”) than to kneel before Caesar. How anyone could be embarrassed of such a glorious past I cannot fathom.

Hispanity has a mission in this world. It was born to be a living example of a truly Catholic culture and society. It exists to be a contrast with the secularized societies of the Western world. It is called to be a light for other nations. The building of this society was the missionaries' intention when they began their work of evangelization. They were seeking to make a reality out of St. Thomas More's Utopia. Their efforts have since been left unattended. If our countries have failed, it is because they have abandoned this noble endeavor. In its place, we have placed ideas and values which are foreign to us. We have dug out our own roots and expected to grow nonetheless. This is, of course, impossible. Without those roots, we can only expect death. Again, González Luna says: “cultures commit suicide when they abandon their essential missions”, and that is precisely what is happening to the Hispanic culture. The relationship between Catholicism and Hispanity is indissoluble because Catholicism forms the roots and foundations of Hispanity. Without Catholicism, Hispanity ceases to exist. It becomes something which might be similar to it, but that does not deserve such great a name. It is then a dead culture, or rather, the corpse of a culture. The very thought of this is intolerable to me since I am profoundly Hispanic.

Humanae Vitae explicada (parte 5) / Humanae Vitae explained (part 5)

Humanae Vitae was written more than forty years ago. This means that modern readers have an advantage over readers back then: that of distance in time. While the readers of the sixties had to look into the future, a future in which Paul VI's warnings seemed like nothing more than uncertain possibilities, we can turn towards the past and confront the reality of what has already happened. With those forty years of experience, we find ourselves in a position from which we can judge whether the “serious consequences of artificial methods of birth control” that Paul VI prophesied would occur where justified or not since we have witnessed the results of having ignored them.

Paul VI mentions the three most evident dangers that the use of artificial birth control brings: a general degradation of morality, beginning with an increase in marital infidelity; a loss of respect towards women and; the possibility of them being used as an instrument of dominion by the public authorities. These conclusions are obvious when you start from the fact that human nature is a fallen nature. This, as many other teachings of the Church, has been misinterpreted by many who have identified it with one of the two extremes that the Church Herself has condemned. In that way, the opponents of Humanae Vitae confuse the notion of fallen nature with the idea that human beings are naturally bad and they base their criticism on that error. The fallen nature of mankind means that our nature is “wounded in the natural powers proper to it; subject to ignorance, suffering, and the dominion of death; and inclined to sin” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 405) but it is not completely corrupted. It is weakened and has a tendency towards evil but it has been redeemed and can, with Divine assistance, overcome this original fault. Ignorance of this reality, as the Catechism says in point 407, “gives rise to serious errors in the areas of education, politics, social action, and morals”. This is precisely what Paul VI is warning us against.

The problem lies in the fact that the prevailing ideology, that of the Enlightenment, denies this doctrine of fallen nature (and in this sense is anything but modern, Pelagius already held this view in the fifth century). In its place, it proclaims a pretty but fallacious theory about man being born in a state of innocence and that it is society and authority who corrupt him. This reasoning is incapable of withstanding a serious analysis based on facts.  On the other hand, we can make an analysis of this kind about the dangers that Paul VI tried to protect us from.

In the first place, we have the danger of a general degradation of morality. It is unquestionable that the moral level of our times has radically changed from that of the days in which Humanae Vitae was written. There might be people who will argue that it has changed for the better, but that is not the case. If it has changed, it has been for the worse. Lets take, for example, the current number of divorces that there are. My objective is not to discredit divorce, since that has already been done by people infinitely more brilliant than myself, but to prove that the increase in the number of these is an indicator of this generalized moral decay and that this has been caused, in great measure, by the introduction of artificial contraceptives. That the increase in the divorce rate is something morally evil follows from the very fact that divorce is something bad. You might be in favor of its legal existence for whatever reason, but nobody upholds divorce as something good. If it exists and is tolerated, it is as a lesser evil, never as a good. Hence, the propagation of divorce is the propagation of an evil. That it is accepted as something normal, and in many cases as something good, means taking that which is bad as good. That is the most clear proof of moral decadence.

Now, the increase in the divorce rate, as well as many other evils have been encouraged by artificial contraception for a very simple reason. What contraceptives do is remove one of the natural consequences of the sexual act. By doing this, they remove, in the mind of their user, the responsibility that performing this act entails. Being responsible means recognizing and accepting the consequences of your actions. With no consequences, there are no responsibilities.

This supposed absence of consequences is false because the sexual act is much more than an animal activity, it is a human act with repercussions in every aspect of human life. Paul VI is very clear when he says that the main victims of this irresponsible sexuality are women. If a man has “consequence-free” sex, this act will have been, for him, nothing but the satisfaction of an appetite. This, obviously, implies that the woman involved was nothing but an object to satisfy that appetite, which is clearly a violation of her dignity. But there is a more subtle side to this. The unitive aspect of the sexual act is more easily perceived by women than by men. For women, physical union also implies, in a natural manner, an emotional union. When the procreative aspect is voluntarily destroyed, the unitive aspect tends to disappear, as is more clearly seen in men. Therefore, the emotional bond is only established on the side of the woman. This lack of emotional correspondence can gravely affect a woman because it proves to her that she was used and not loved.

In the political and governmental level, this lack of responsibility means that States do not seek the most adequate solutions to social problems, but only the easy ones. It is much easier to control the population through sterilization programs than to create the necessary conditions for new generations to live in a dignified way. This is a reality that has been lived in the Third World. Hundreds of people have been sterilized, many times without them knowing, by unethical government authorities who have implemented population control policies which do not respect human dignity. This has happened by orders of international organisms and powerful foreign governments. Paul VI was not simply imagining things when he mentioned that there was a real possibility of this happening.

The alternative to all this is an ordered sexuality, respectful of human dignity according to God's will, which is accessible to our reason through the laws of nature. The Church cannot change these laws (which is why it is ridiculous for people to think that some day the Pope might change these teachings) and all She can do is remind us to respect them. Paul VI is not naive as to believe that without contraception human life would be perfect. However, there is no doubt that it would be better. And so, Paul VI ends his encyclical by calling all the Catholic faithful to recover the authentic meaning of sexuality and to share it with the world. As I said before, this correctly understood sexuality has love as its center and it demands sacrifice and self-gift. This is impossible without self-control and the practice of the virtue of chastity. Restoring this meaning represents a huge job for the faithful. It demands an enormous work of education that begins at home, with the family, and then is extended to all society through social and political action. This is the duty we have as Catholics and which we have, unfortunately, ignored for too long.

Humanae vitae explicada (parte 4) / Humanae Vitae explained (part 4)

The purpose of Humanae Vitae is to declare whether artificial contraceptives are morally acceptable or not. It seeks to declare the official stance of the Catholic Church with respect to them. That stance is quite clear:

“We are obliged once more to declare that the direct interruption of the generative process already begun and, above all, all direct abortion, even for therapeutic reasons, are to be absolutely excluded as lawful means of regulating the number of children. Equally to be condemned, as the magisterium of the Church has affirmed on many occasions, is direct sterilization, whether of the man or of the woman, whether permanent or temporary.

Similarly excluded is any action which either before, at the moment of, or after sexual intercourse, is specifically intended to prevent procreation—whether as an end or as a means.”

The question that naturally arises is: why? Why does the Church have such a negative view on artificial contraception? The explanation is simple and the key to it is that spousal love is meant to be a total gift of self. Both spouses are meant to give themselves completely to each other. This total gift of self includes, obviously, their reproductive capacities. When one of the spouses denies this capacity to his or her partner, then it ceases to be a total gift of self. This love is then incomplete, crippled.

Many people will argue that there are infertile couples and that if what has been said is true, then their love would be incomplete as well. Paul VI responds by saying that this is not the case. Their love can still be a total gift of self because being infertile does not necessarily mean that they are holding something back. They simply do not have their own fecundity to give away. In a similar fashion, natural family planning is based on this principle. During the periods in which a woman is infertile, she has no fecundity to give away so she is not denying it to her husband. The immorality of using artificial contraception lies in the fact that it is a negation of the total gift of self. In consequence, the conjugal act itself becomes morally unacceptable because one of the spouses (or both) is withholding a part of his or herself, making the act a selfish act and, therefore, one contrary to the very meaning of love. A sexual act outside of the context of love is an immoral act because it lends itself to the objectification of the other. It is then reduced to something unworthy of the dignity of Man.

Given that love is a choice, that is, an act of the will guided by the light of reason, it implies a responsibility. This is what Paul VI refers to as Responsible Parenthood. Responsible Parenthood in this sense is completely different from the self contradicting term that defenders of contraception use. It is ridiculous that those who are pushing to remove all consequences from the sexual act should talk about responsibility, especially when being responsible means accepting the consequences of one’s actions. Paul VI, on the other hand, proposes a coherent and rational explanation of Responsible Parenthood. It begins with the recognition, by both husband and wife, of their duties toward God, themselves, their families and human society. It also implies recognizing the fact that there are many things which are external to us and which we should not capriciously try to alter, particularly if they belong to the natural order. Once this recognition has taken place we can truly talk about Responsible Parenthood. Responsible Parenthood consists in using our reason and will not for whatever we desire but for what is good. They should be used to elevate mankind, not to degrade it. Hence, Responsible Parenthood means that both reason and will should be used to control emotions and instincts in order that sexuality be placed at the service of love. Love is the opposite of selfishness, therefore, offspring should be welcomed even when it requires great sacrifices from the parents. A couple can only lawfully decide to not have more children when there are serious reasons for doing so. Selfish motives, such as maintaining a certain standard of living, are clearly not serious reasons. One aspect of Responsible Parenthood that is often overlooked is the social responsibility that a couple acquires when they decide to marry. The consequences of overlooking this have become evident in our days. Children are necessary to maintain the social order. Without them, the population ages to a point where it becomes unsustainable. Such is the case of many European countries. Parents have a social duty to bring forth new individuals so that society can be preserved. Doing the opposite is self-destructive. Paul VI prophetically announces the ways in which artificial contraceptives can bring about this destruction. That shall be the next topic that we will cover.

Humanae Vitae explicada (parte 3) / Humanae Vitae explained (part 3)

Last time I ended with a question: if most people find sexuality without the unitive aspect repulsive, why do they not find sex without the procreative aspect equally despicable? Trying to remove procreation from sex is not something new (for example, there are accounts of it in the Old Testament) but it is until our times that it has become something “normal” and widely accepted. Even now, this only occurs among Western or westernized societies. This leads us to another question: how is it that we have come to this point?

Paul VI answers these questions when he talks about the many changes that have taken place in our civilization. He is referring not so much to the causes of this new mentality but to the justifications that modern man uses to defend this distorted view of sexuality. He does not go into an in-depth analysis of these because that is not the purpose of Humanae Vitae. However, we should delve deeper in all these matters in order to better understand the teachings of the Pope. It is clear that he believes that Materialism and Individualism are the main culprits of this mess in the understanding of sexuality. The “contraception revolution” is a direct consequence of these ideologies.

As I have said before, a materialistic and individualistic society is one where love cannot exist. If there are no spiritual values (which are universal) then the notion of sacrificial love has no meaning. But sacrificial love is exactly what married love is meant to be! The gift of self makes no sense in a culture that teaches that “fulfillment” consists in the accumulation of material goods and sensuous pleasures because other people represent an obstacle for this so-called fulfillment. The very idea of “gift” is incompatible with it. As can be seen, these ideologies destroy the very core of a correct understanding of love and, as a consequence, of sex. Unfortunately, few people value this reasoning because it is philosophical in nature, and nowadays the only valid results are those of “science”, whatever that means.

The new role of science and technology in society is something Paul VI considers of vital importance in this debate. What he calls “man's stupendous progress in the domination and rational organization of the forces of nature to the point that he [man] is endeavoring to extend this control over every aspect of his own life” is basically the belief that if we have the technical capability of doing something, it is morally right to do it. This is evidently false. The fact that we can artificially prevent conception from taking place does not mean that it is correct to do so, especially if it implies destroying human sexuality and, hence, attempting against human dignity.

The economical arguments in favor of birth control are equally fallacious. “It is obvious”, they say, “that a larger population represents fewer resources for everyone”. They then proceed to show how all per capita variables will decrease when the population increases and everything else remains constant. Since this is based on “scientific models” and research, then it must be true. They never stop and think that in reality no variable remains constant and that there is a strong correlation between the amount of goods produced and consumed and the amount of people around to produce and consume them. A decrease in population will cause a decrease in production and consumption, and, if this population fall occurs at a faster rate than the increase in productivity and consumption per person, then goods will become scarce even when the population was reduced. The weakness of this economical reasoning makes me wonder if it is not only being used as an excuse disguised as a scientific argument.

However, Individualism has a more subtle influence on the modern concepts of sexuality, love and the relationship between the sexes. Paul VI hints at it when he says “Also noteworthy is a new understanding of the dignity of woman and her place in society, of the value of conjugal love in marriage and the relationship of conjugal acts to this love.” All these notions have been changed by Individualism and what I call the “ideology of tension”. Individualism leads, by its very nature, to tensions: tensions between the individual and the State, between the individual and society and between individuals. These tensions can remain balanced for a while but they will unavoidably end in conflict. This is something that has become particularly clear in the relationship between men and women. Women and men are no longer seen as collaborators (from Latin collaborare, to labor with) working in a complementary fashion, but as rivals. It follows that if women have to compete with men, they need to remove all “obstacles” that hold them back. The most obvious one is maternity. The damage this does to women is greater than we think and the Catholic Church seems at times to be the only one to care about this! The ideology of tension goes even further and introduces conflict in the relationship between parents and children. Children are now seen as an obstacle to maintaining a certain standard of living. Now a child can be called “unwanted”. That reflects the level of corruption that these tensions have caused. Once again, we come to the conclusion that Individualism is incompatible with sacrifice, which is essential for love to exist.

To what degree Individualism, Materialism and their bastard child Relativism will continue to distort our views on sexuality is something that Paul VI only mentions very briefly and which I will cover on some other occasion.
