Algunos comentarios sobre el liderazgo masculino / Some comments on male leadership

The concept of leadership is one of many that has been, unfortunately, corrupted by Contemporary mentality. To believe that a leader is he who is superior to the rest and that leading means to impose one's will over others is the result of the erroneous philosophy of Nietzsche and his insanity of the “Will to Power”. To suppose that “active” leadership is better than “passive” leadership just because it implies action is also the result of a Modern obsession: that of the primacy of action over contemplation.

It is this flawed understanding of what leadership is that makes many judge the Catholic belief that a man is the one who leads by action in a family as degrading to women. As a proof that this teaching is sexist, they resort to the words of Saint Paul in his letter to the Ephesians: “Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body. As the church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything.” Those who argue in this manner believe that they are right and that they possess a valid argument in favor of their point in these verses, but they forget a small detail: these verses cannot be correctly understood if the following verses are not read as well: “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word, that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. So (also) husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. 'For this reason a man shall leave (his) father and (his) mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.' This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church. In any case, each one of you should love his wife as himself, and the wife should respect her husband.” (Ephesians, 5: 22-33)

The fact that husbands are required to lead their wives like Christ leads his Church is not an affirmation of superiority and whoever believes this should study the basics of Catholic thought before trying to use the Scriptures against Church teachings. Not doing so only makes him look like an ignorant fool. To love their wives like Christ loves his Church is a calling to give their lives for them. Leadership in Catholic thought is not a matter of power, but of service. Whoever wants to be the first in the Kingdom of Heaven should become the servant of all, says the Gospel. For Catholicism, both men and women are called to a vocation of service and self-giving, that is, they are both called to lead their family, but in different ways. Contrary to Modern thought, which believes that a man has the right to enjoy the fruits of his work, Catholic thought teaches that a man lives that vocation of self-giving by placing the fruit of his work at his wife's feet. With his work, a man gives himself to his family. Women have maternity as a means of self-giving. Men don't, but they have the possibility of living this call to service through their labor, that is, by abandoning their personal comfort in order to provide for what their wives and children need. If leading means to serve and in order to serve one must become less than the other, then believing that man, in leading, becomes more than woman, is nonsense.

On the other hand, to assume that female leadership, which manifests itself mainly through inspiration, is inferior to the active leadership that is required from men, is wrong as well. Both types of leadership are complementary and one is useless without the other. To act just for the sake of acting, without any motivation or purpose is simply stupid. In the same way, an inspiration that does not conduct to an action is sterile. The ideology of progress (that is, the ideology of action without any other purpose than action itself) has not taken us to the ideal world which it had promised and has, rather, brought more problems than solutions. This is a clear example of action not being superior to contemplation. Going back to the passage I cited above, if Christ wishes to “present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing” it is so He can contemplate and rejoice in her beauty and perfection. It is so He can be inspired in that perfection to continue giving Himself to her. The same thing happens between a husband and his wife. The more noble that a woman is, the more she inspires the actions of a man to be nobler. The words of Archbishop Fulton Sheen are much better than mine: “When man loves woman, it follows the nobler the woman the nobler the love, the higher the demands by the woman, the more worthy a man must be.”

I do not see in which way this could be discriminatory to women. This circle of self-giving brings harmony to the relationships between men and women, not a permanent tension and conflict like the one that gender ideology creates. Nonetheless, the fanaticism of those who accuse Catholics of being fanatics does not allow them to see this self-evident reality.

¡Modestia, por favor! / Some modesty, please!

One of the virtues to which we give the least importance is the virtue of modesty in dress. It is a silent and discrete virtue and that is why we consider it so insignificant. Despite its apparent smallness and weakness, this virtue is one of the corner stones required in order to restore the position of women in society. It is essential so that women can reclaim their dignity.

This modesty in dress extols the dignity of women in three distinct levels: one in relationship with men, another one in relationship with themselves and the last one in relationship with God.

The first one of these levels is by far the most evident and easy to grasp. Its objective is to protect women, not only from the inclemencies of the weather (I find it shocking to see women with really low-cut necklines on cold days, exposing enough of them to contract pneumonia), but, above all, from the lust of men. I do not seek to excuse lustful men but controlling one's eyes and thoughts is one of the most difficult things to achieve, especially when so few have been raised to do it. It is a constant war that will only end with death. Therefore, women should see in modesty not only a protection against this lust, but also a means of helping men in their daily struggle against it. Why make something that is already hard even harder?

Modesty in dress protects the dignity of women because a lustful glance degrades a woman by transforming her into an object. It vilifies her. If a woman dressed in a provocative manner could see, at least for a second, what goes through men's minds when they look at her, she would immediately look for something to cover herself with. She would probably run away, nauseated because she would see herself converted into a sexual object used to satisfy the lowest of men's appetites, that appetite that C.S. Lewis called “the prose and not the poetry of the flesh”.

The second of these levels has to do with how a woman sees herself. It is sad to see a woman who thinks that she cannot attract a man unless she dresses provocatively. The only thing she achieves is to not attract worthy men. What woman thinks that the only worthy part of her being is her body? Isn't she worthy because of her intelligence, her personality and the beauty of her soul as well? Trying to attract men by exposing her own body is aspiring to much less than what she deserves. It is lending herself to be treated as if she were worth less. Contemporary culture, with it's ideal of artificially created beauty sold to us through cinema and television is responsible, to a large extent, in lowering female self-esteem. If the “perfect” women have to expose their bodies in order to get the “perfect” men, then with what else are “average” women left to achieve the same thing? The truth is that there is nothing more attractive for a man (at least for a real man) than a modestly dressed woman because by dressing that way she is proving to be worthy for what she is and not just for her body.

The third and last of these levels is also the highest since it is to be found in the spiritual realm. Here, modesty in dress is like a veil that is used to hide that which is sacred. The body is, in the divine plan, a sacred thing and should be treated as such. The dignity of women is something sacred and should be protected with the same devotion and effort with which we protect the sacred. This veil avoids unworthy eyes of seeing that which is of God. What is hidden behind a veil is placed there so that it is not used for something that goes against its holy nature. If something is veiled it is because its considered so important as to come directly from God. Any other use for that sacred object is considered a sacrilege.

In the same way, the female body should be protected from the indiscrete and sacrilegious gaze that seeks to use it for a lesser end than it deserves. Just like the high priest had to be purified before being allowed to cross the veil in the temple of Jerusalem, so should a man prove to be worthy and pure before placing his eyes upon that which is veiled by a woman's modesty. What is hidden is hidden so that it can be revealed to him who is worthy of it, and to avoid being taken by any passerby. In that manner, a woman's body should be hidden so it can be fully revealed only to the man who vows to love and protect not only that woman's body, but also her soul. When the opposite happens, many men take that body (even if its only in their imaginations) and commit the sacrilege of treating that which is sacred as garbage.

Feminism has done much damage to society, to men, but, above all, to women. It set itself the goal of placing women in a plane of absolute equality with men and it is achieving that. Now women think like men. And just like we men have never been able to understand women, so have they become incapable of understanding themselves. Only because that is true do I dare to scrutinize the female heart,, trying to grasp its anxieties and longings, though I know it is an effort that will most probably end in failure. The mystery of feminity goes way beyond my limited capacity of reasoning. Its full understanding requires a certain intuition (intuition which every woman posesses) which I lack. Contemplating this mystery and trying to write about it places me in a similar situation to the one I experienced in puberty while trying to speak to a girl: I would blush from head to toes, my mind would go blank and I would be unable to pronounce a single word.

Lets begin by looking at some proofs that the so-called women's liberation has only succeeded in masculinizing women, causing them a great evil. One case that is very evident and ever more grave since it becomes more common by the day is that of women who place their personal ambition above everything else. These women have proven to be as smart, strong and astute as the most successful of men. They attend the best universities in the world, lead large corporations and occupy important seats in the government. They have large ambitions and they obtain everything by themselves and for themselves. But then, when they look in the mirror, they find out that it is not an ambitious woman who is staring back at them, but a man. A most despicable man: ambitious and selfish, capable of doing anything in order to succeed. That's what they have become when they use their education and their career not as a means to fulfill their own femininity, but to reach a state of identity, that is, one where there is no difference with men.

All this happens because they have lost from sight the goal of their existence: self-giving. That is also mens goal but how we reach it is different, according to our distinct nature. When a woman forgets this fact, she is ignoring a reality that is written in her very body. Her body is made to give itself to others, beginning with its capability of giving and sustaining the life of another human being. What a terrible contradiction that the same society that talks so much about giving in to our lowest instincts seeks, at the same time, to repress the most noble of all human instincts: the maternal instinct. What a huge opportunity do women have to satisfy their calling to serving others! Maternity is a means of self-giving which no man has and in front of which we can only stand in awe. If a man cannot admire the beauty of the mystery of motherhood, if he cannot see how great and noble each and every woman who has accepted that gift has been, then he is unworthy of being called a man.

And yet, the same society that calls itself liberator of women seeks, through all possible means, to anhilate that gift of motherhood. When motherhood is destroyed, female sexuality is perverted, just like male sexuality has been perverted. Instead of sexuality being a gift of one's self to the other, it becomes a using the other. What better example of this than the women known as cougars [older women who use young men as sex toys]. These women, who are usually highly successful in their careers have given up other things (like forming a family) in order to achieve their goals but have come to realize that they have an emptiness in their hearts. But, being the successful women that they are (or should I say successful men?), they are not capable of giving themselves to someone else, let alone lowering themselves before a man (who would, at the same time, lower himself before her), as is required by true love. It is easier for them to use young (and I'd add stupid) men to satisfy their sexual cravings. That way they can avoid any sort of commitment or sacrifice. But then, when these women look at their reflection they don't see a powerful woman who can submit men to her will. They see a man, the same type of man who probably left them deeply hurt at some point in their lives: a jerk, the man who boasts about using women. When women ignore their vocation to self-giving, they become that which they hate the most.

After undestanding this, its evident why so many women feel frustrated and disappointed despite all the “advances” of feminism. Turned into copies of the lowest of men, how could they ever satisfy the yearning of their souls to be inspiration and the reason of being of others? Once they have been knocked down from their pedestals to be placed in the same place than men, after the children of their womb have been taken away from them and once they've been turned into objects that can be used and thrown away, what man could possibly want to see in them a light that will guide them to become better men? Humiliated and wounded, used and thrown away, modern woman lies naked at the view of all. She has become like the most despised of men. What gentleman would want to cover her with his mantle?
