Si a lo largo de la historia las mujeres han servido como inspiración para los hombres, no es de sorprender que la mujer perfecta, la Virgen María, haya sido y siga siendo la más importante inspiración para los más grandes de entre los hombres.
En el siglo XIII, el gran rey castellano Alfonso X, llamado el Sabio, mandó componer (y compuso unas cuantas él mismo) más de cuatrocientas piezas musicales en honor de la Virgen María, siendo la mayoría de ellas historias de milagros ocurridos por su intercesión. Este conjunto de obras musicales es conocido como “Las Cantigas de Santa María” y es la colección más grande de música medieval que poseemos en la actualidad. Están escritas en galaico-portugués (también conocido como portugués medieval), la lengua que se hablaba en el norte de lo que ahora es España y en Portugal. Esa lengua dio origen al gallego y al portugués moderno.
Una de las cantigas más famosas es la cantiga 100: Santa María, Strela do Día (Santa María, estrella del día). Esta bella composición la pueden escuchar en las siguientes ligas:

Cuando veo la situación del mundo actual me pregunto si no sería conveniente que nuestros líderes se dejaran inspirar por la Madre de Dios (aquí seguro habrá uno que otro defensor de la separación de la Iglesia y del Estado que se esté rasgando las vestiduras) como el gran rey castellano lo hizo. Ahorita ¿a cuál lider mundial podríamos apodar “el Sabio”?
If throughout history women have been a source of inspiration for men, it should come as no surprise that the perfect woman, the Virgin Mary, has been and continues to be the most important inspiration for the greatest of men.
In that golden age of mankind that was the thirteenth century, the great Castilian king Alfonso X, also known as “the Wise”, ordered the composition (and composed many himself) over four hundred pieces of music in honor of Our Lady, being most of them stories about miracles obtained through her intercession. These works of music are known as the “Cantigas de Santa Maria” (Canticles of Holy Mary) and are the largest collection of medieval music known to us. They are written in Galician-Portuguese (or medieval Portuguese), the language spoken at the time in what is today Northern Spain and Portugal. This language gave birth to both Galician and modern Portuguese.

When I look at the current situation of the world I ask myself if it wouldn't be convenient for our leaders to be inspired by the Mother of God (I'm sure some defenders of the separation of Church and State are freaking out by this) just like the great Castilian monarch was. As of now, which world leader could we nickname “the Wise”?
