Meditación sobre el Logos / Meditation on the Logos

Nosotros no podemos comprenderlas.

To say that Christianity is irrational is to know nothing about it. In any case, it would be more adequate to say that certain truths about the Christian faith are suprarational or that they transcend reason. But even that is only a partial truth. They are suprarational from the standpoint of human reason. That is, they are above our reason. We cannot comprehend them. That, however, does not mean that they are beyond all reason. God Himself is the ultimate source of Reason and the truths of faith are not incomprehensible to Him. This might come as a surprise to people who have been raised to believe that human reason is the only reason. Our society seems to be unaware that believing that is one of the most unreasonable things of all.

We can see this unreasonableness in the contradictory attitudes that the enemies of the Faith have had towards it. Christianity has been accused of not being rational but also of being too rational, depending on what is most convenient to its enemies. They seem to never be satisfied. The truth is that Christianity is perhaps the only religion that can unite faith and reason. Only in Christianity can reason be developed to its fullest. This is so because it is the religion of the Logos. But what does that mean?

The gospel of John starts thus: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” “Word” is a translation of the Latin Verbum which in turn is a translation of the Greek Logos. Hence, Logos means Word. However, the term “Logos” was meant to convey much more than what the term “Word” conveys to us today. For most of the people of our time, a word is simply an instrument for communication. It is considered an arbitrary arrangement of sounds to which society has attached a meaning. A materialistic mindset cannot see beyond that, proving, once more, that it is materialism that narrows one's mind, while Christianity broadens it. The reality is that words are much more than simple means of communication. They are a sign of our capacity to reason. A word allows us to communicate to others those immaterial things that are called ideas. Words are the incarnation of our ideas. Therefore, the term Logos points us in the direction of rationality.

Now, rationality without Truth cannot exist, for rationality requires order and order cannot emerge from the chaos of Relativism. Truth, which goes hand in hand with reality, is precisely what provides this order. In the degree in which something possesses fullness of being, that is, in the degree in which it is real, it possesses truth. Using the language of Aristotle, we could say that truth is directly proportional to the actuality of a being. When we move into the realm of thoughts, we discover that for a thought to be true, it must correspond to reality, otherwise it is false. In conclusion, Truth does not depend on what we think or believe, but on reality itself. A false thought will be false no matter how much you believe it to be true. Therefore, if Logos is pointing towards rationality, then it is also pointing towards Truth, and hence, to Existence.

There is more to this. The presence of Reason implies also a Will. Reason without will is useless. Will is what allows a rational being to act according to its reason. It is not a coincidence that from the Latin word verbum we have derived the term “verb” which represents an action. Because the Logos possesses a will, it is capable of action. Both reason and will define personhood. Only a person has reason and will. Again, a narrow materialistic mindset can only see personhood as applied to human beings (and sometimes, not even to them). A broader Christian mindset can see personality in other beings, such as God and the angels. But that is not the point. What matters is that the Logos is not simply an abstract thing. The Logos is a person. This means that there can be a relationship with Him and, above all, that He desires that relationship with us.

For the Greeks, Logos was defined as the rational principle of the universe. Christianity preserved that meaning but also added to it. For the Greeks it was something vague and beyond human understanding. It was the recognition of something infinitely beyond mankind. This ultimate principle of rationality was beyond our reach. This is one of the problems that we face today: is Truth, if it exists, accessible to us? In Christianity, the Logos, because of His personhood, is no longer something unreachable: “the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” Because the Logos is a person and can act, He reaches down towards us. He comes within our grasp and reveals to us His very nature.

Because of the attribute of Divine simplicity, the Logos, God's reason, is God. But it is Divine Reason, not human reason that is God. Human reason finds its origin in Divine Reason, but they are different things. To believe that human reason should be deified was the mistake of the philosophers of the Enlightenment. While Christianity spoke of Man being the image of God, the Enlightenment made God in the image of Man. We are not the Word but simply echoes of the Word. We are images of it. We came forth from the Word and are meant to return to it. When this order is changed, human reason is put in a situation which it cannot handle and it becomes the first victim of this madness. Soon, that very reason, which is what distinguishes us from the brutes, turns against itself. Without the Logos, our reason loses its privileged spot within creation. It becomes the result of a long series of coincidences, in something that could have well developed in any other species. It has become common to hear people say that human beings are not different from animals. Some even try to give animals the same rights that humans have. With the abolition of reason has come also an abolition of the dignity of the Human Person. Recognition of the inalienable dignity of human beings, dignity which is rooted in the fact that we are images of the Logos, is rejected and exchanged for ideologies that see human beings as objects. What Communism, Nazism, radical Capitalism and all other forms of materialistic ideologies have in common is their rejection of this dignity because of their rejection of the Logos. When the order of the Logos disappears, its place is taken by the insanity of Relativism which can then justify any form of totalitarianism. This chaos is not beneficial for the development of human reason; it is clearly detrimental for it.

Within Christianity, human reason finds its proper place in the order of the world. Our reason is not God, but comes from Him. When it is submitted to the Divine Reason, it can grow and develop to its full potential because, as I have already said, it is broadened. Otherwise, it narrows, withers and easily becomes an instrument of oppression or despair. The order of the world testifies in favor of the existence of the Logos. Without Him, the universe can only be one huge contradiction. How can an ordered universe emerge from nothing? Without a rational principle, the universe cannot be understood in a rational way. Without the Logos, we cannot understand our own existence and that is a very terrifying idea.

Western civilization has always been the civilization of reason. However, the union between the philosophy of Greece and the wisdom of Israel from which it was born could only take place because the Logos became man. In the Logos lie the roots of the West; only by returning to Him who is “the Truth, the Life and the Way” will our civilization be saved.

Imagina / Imagine

One often hears that religion is bad because in its name many people have been killed. Using this logic it naturally follows that religion should disappear in order for us to have a peaceful life. Even a famous song talks of this:

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

Of course, these “dreamers” seem to forget that most of the people who have been killed in the past, and continue to be killed today, have been murdered for many reasons other than religion. They also forget that a group that has always been particularly fond of killing human beings is that of those who believe that religion is bad and decide to rid humanity of it. There is no evidence that could even suggest that a world without religion would be a better world. On the other hand, there are plenty of facts that indicate that a world without it would be worse. These enemies of religion usually soften their position by saying that they do not oppose religious sentiment (whatever that means) but only organized religion. That is a politically correct way of saying that they do not approve of Catholicism, because Catholicism is the only truly organized religion. Because it is organized, it can offer a response to their defective logic and that is something they dislike. There is something about the Catholic Church that seems to bother them more than anything else. Maybe it is the fact that it has survived despite all efforts to destroy it or perhaps it is because what it teaches is True and they just refuse to accept that. This, of course, is not what they openly say. I am forced to make suppositions because all the answers I have heard on this are as superficial as the belief that religion is bad because it leads to violence. We can, therefore, reduce their saying that “religion is bad” to “Catholicism is bad and it would be better if it had never existed”.

Let us do exactly what the song I quoted asks us to do: let us imagine. Imagine a world without Catholicism and let us see if what these people claim is true or not:

We might begin by removing the most visible elements of Catholicism: the imposing structures in which Christians worship. Imagine Rome without St. Peter's, Paris without Notre Dame, London without St. Paul's or Westminster Abbey. Imagine Europe without any of its glorious cathedrals, monasteries and convents. With the disappearance of religious architecture we might as well get rid of other forms of religious art. No longer would we have Michelangelo's Pietá, his David or his Moses, his Sistine Chapel; many of the works of Bernini or Caravaggio would never have come into existence. The wall on which Da Vinci's Last Supper was painted would no longer be there. The greatest compositions of Mozart or Bach, Vivaldi or Haydn would have been nothing but a sombre silence. The ink which has given us the Confession's of Augustine, the poetry of John of the Cross or Teresa of Avila or the hell, purgatory and Heaven of Dante, would have dried without ever being used. The world would be, without a doubt, a less beautiful place.

Without Catholicism, the synthesis of Faith and Reason would have never taken place. Without a Faith in the Logos (the Word), the insufficiency of our own reason would have led us quickly into insanity. We probably would have found a temporary refuge, if any, in the religions of despair of the East with their mysticism of dissolution, had we not had the works of the Church Fathers, who united Greek Philosophy with the faith, and reminded us of the reasonableness of the world. That almost obsessive drive to understand and to believe, which St. Anselm summed up in the phrase Fides Quaerens Intellectum (faith seeking understanding) would not be a part of our lives. Let alone most of the culture of Antiquity since the monks that patiently copied by hand the works of old would not have existed. The metaphysics of Aristotle would not have found fulfillment in the “metaphysics of Exodus” (as Etienne Gilson calls it) in the brilliant mind of St. Thomas Aquinas because the book of Exodus would never have come into being. It is not difficult to imagine that a significant part of the philosophy of Aristotle could have disappeared had Christianity never been born. We would also have to erase the university system from the face of the Earth. After all, universities were a creation of the Medieval Church. With it, we would also get rid of the majority of the primary and secondary education system all over the world since it was created and is maintained by thousands of religious men and women. Without all of this, science as we know it would never have arisen. The world would be, without a doubt, a less intelligible place.

Imagine that the phrases “God created man in his image” and “the Word became flesh” had never been written. These are the very foundation for the belief in the dignity of the Human person. Without them that idea could not possibly exist. For the ancients it was only natural that the weakest should die or that some people were inferior to others. Slavery and infanticide would still be widely accepted because it was through the work of Christianity that it came to be eliminated, at least in the West. It was not Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Seneca or any of the philosophers of old, but St. Paul who wrote: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus." (Gal. 3:28). There would be no such thing as tolerance and equality. Those who say that religion is bad because it has caused death to many do not realize that without Catholicism, human life would be as disposable as it was in the Ancient World. Caring for the sick or the abandoned, looking after orphans and widows, feeding the hungry and giving water to the thirsty would no longer be values that society would strive for. Imagine a world without the many hospitals, orphanages and assistance homes that have been founded and taken care of by religious people. The world would be, without a doubt, a less humane place.

In a few words, without Christianity, the world would be a place not worth living in.

Lepanto

Blancos los surtidores en los patios del sol;
La fría Reina de Inglaterra se mira en el espejo;
La sombra de los Valois bosteza en la Misa;

Desde los templos donde cierran los ojos los desdeñosos dioses amarillos;
Donde hay cielos caídos, y colores malvados y seres sin ojos;

Salpicados de una espléndida enfermedad, la enfermedad de la perla;

Es aquel que arriesga y que pierde y que se ríe cuando pierde;

Blande su lanza de hierro, bate sus alas de piedra;
El fragor atraviesa la Normandía; el fragor está solo;

Y velan los altos leones alados en las galeras de San Marcos;
Y sobre los navíos hay palacios de morenos emires de barba negra;
Escalonaron pirámides para dioses cuando la opresión era joven;

On October 7th, 1571, a Christian fleet, led by Don Juan de Austria, defeated a Turkish fleet in one of the most important battles of Western history. The defeat of the Turks in the Battle of Lepanto saved Europe from being invaded by the Muslims and definitively changed the direction of the war between Christendom and Islam. The Pope had asked all the faithful to pray the Rosary to beg, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, for the triumph of the Christian forces. Once the victory was obtained, this day was declared the feast of “Our Lady of Victory”. Years later, the name of the feast was changed to “Our Lady of the Rosary”, to remind us of the power of this prayer. G.K. Chesterton wrote an epic poem in remembrance of this battle:

White founts falling in the Courts of the sun,
And the Soldan of Byzantium is smiling as they run;
There is laughter like the fountains in that face of all men feared,
It stirs the forest darkness, the darkness of his beard;
It curls the blood-red crescent, the crescent of his lips;
For the inmost sea of all the earth is shaken with his ships.
They have dared the white republics up the capes of Italy,
They have dashed the Adriatic round the Lion of the Sea,
And the Pope has cast his arms abroad for agony and loss,
And called the kings of Christendom for swords about the Cross.
The cold queen of England is looking in the glass;
The shadow of the Valois is yawning at the Mass;
From evening isles fantastical rings faint the Spanish gun,
And the Lord upon the Golden Horn is laughing in the sun.

Dim drums throbbing, in the hills half heard,
Where only on a nameless throne a crownless prince has stirred,
Where, risen from a doubtful seat and half attainted stall,
The last knight of Europe takes weapons from the wall,
The last and lingering troubadour to whom the bird has sung,
That once went singing southward when all the world was young.
In that enormous silence, tiny and unafraid,
Comes up along a winding road the noise of the Crusade.
Strong gongs groaning as the guns boom far,
Don John of Austria is going to the war,
Stiff flags straining in the night-blasts cold
In the gloom black-purple, in the glint old-gold,
Torchlight crimson on the copper kettle-drums,
Then the tuckets, then the trumpets, then the cannon, and he comes.
Don John laughing in the brave beard curled,
Spurning of his stirrups like the thrones of all the world,
Holding his head up for a flag of all the free.
Love-light of Spain--hurrah!
Death-light of Africa!
Don John of Austria
Is riding to the sea.

Mahound is in his paradise above the evening star,
(Don John of Austria is going to the war.)
He moves a mighty turban on the timeless houri's knees,
His turban that is woven of the sunsets and the seas.
He shakes the peacock gardens as he rises from his ease,
And he strides among the tree-tops and is taller than the trees;
And his voice through all the garden is a thunder sent to bring
Black Azrael and Ariel and Ammon on the wing.
Giants and the Genii,
Multiplex of wing and eye,
Whose strong obedience broke the sky
When Solomon was king.

They rush in red and purple from the red clouds of the morn,
From the temples where the yellow gods shut up their eyes in scorn;
They rise in green robes roaring from the green hells of the sea
Where fallen skies and evil hues and eyeless creatures be,
On them the sea-valves cluster and the grey sea-forests curl,
Splashed with a splendid sickness, the sickness of the pearl;
They swell in sapphire smoke out of the blue cracks of the ground,--
They gather and they wonder and give worship to Mahound.
And he saith, "Break up the mountains where the hermit-folk can hide,
And sift the red and silver sands lest bone of saint abide,
And chase the Giaours flying night and day, not giving rest,
For that which was our trouble comes again out of the west.
We have set the seal of Solomon on all things under sun,
Of knowledge and of sorrow and endurance of things done.
But a noise is in the mountains, in the mountains, and I know
The voice that shook our palaces--four hundred years ago:
It is he that saith not 'Kismet'; it is he that knows not Fate;
It is Richard, it is Raymond, it is Godfrey at the gate!
It is he whose loss is laughter when he counts the wager worth,
Put down your feet upon him, that our peace be on the earth."
For he heard drums groaning and he heard guns jar,
(Don John of Austria is going to the war.)
Sudden and still--hurrah!
Bolt from Iberia!
Don John of Austria
Is gone by Alcalar.

St. Michaels on his Mountain in the sea-roads of the north
(Don John of Austria is girt and going forth.)
Where the grey seas glitter and the sharp tides shift
And the sea-folk labour and the red sails lift.
He shakes his lance of iron and he claps his wings of stone;
The noise is gone through Normandy; the noise is gone alone;
The North is full of tangled things and texts and aching eyes,
And dead is all the innocence of anger and surprise,
And Christian killeth Christian in a narrow dusty room,
And Christian dreadeth Christ that hath a newer face of doom,
And Christian hateth Mary that God kissed in Galilee,--
But Don John of Austria is riding to the sea.
Don John calling through the blast and the eclipse
Crying with the trumpet, with the trumpet of his lips,
Trumpet that sayeth ha!
Domino gloria!
Don John of Austria
Is shouting to the ships.

King Philip's in his closet with the Fleece about his neck
(Don John of Austria is armed upon the deck.)
The walls are hung with velvet that is black and soft as sin,
And little dwarfs creep out of it and little dwarfs creep in.
He holds a crystal phial that has colours like the moon,
He touches, and it tingles, and he trembles very soon,
And his face is as a fungus of a leprous white and grey
Like plants in the high houses that are shuttered from the day,
And death is in the phial and the end of noble work,
But Don John of Austria has fired upon the Turk.
Don John's hunting, and his hounds have bayed--
Booms away past Italy the rumour of his raid.
Gun upon gun, ha! ha!
Gun upon gun, hurrah!
Don John of Austria
Has loosed the cannonade.

The Pope was in his chapel before day or battle broke,
(Don John of Austria is hidden in the smoke.)
The hidden room in man's house where God sits all the year,
The secret window whence the world looks small and very dear.
He sees as in a mirror on the monstrous twilight sea
The crescent of his cruel ships whose name is mystery;
They fling great shadows foe-wards, making Cross and Castle dark,
They veil the plumèd lions on the galleys of St. Mark;
And above the ships are palaces of brown, black-bearded chiefs,
And below the ships are prisons, where with multitudinous griefs,
Christian captives sick and sunless, all a labouring race repines
Like a race in sunken cities, like a nation in the mines.
They are lost like slaves that sweat, and in the skies of morning hung
The stair-ways of the tallest gods when tyranny was young.
They are countless, voiceless, hopeless as those fallen or fleeing on
Before the high Kings' horses in the granite of Babylon.
And many a one grows witless in his quiet room in hell
Where a yellow face looks inward through the lattice of his cell,
And he finds his God forgotten, and he seeks no more a sign--
(But Don John of Austria has burst the battle-line!)
Don John pounding from the slaughter-painted poop,
Purpling all the ocean like a bloody pirate's sloop,
Scarlet running over on the silvers and the golds,
Breaking of the hatches up and bursting of the holds,
Thronging of the thousands up that labour under sea
White for bliss and blind for sun and stunned for liberty.

Vivat Hispania!
Domino Gloria!
Don John of Austria
Has set his people free!

Cervantes on his galley sets the sword back in the sheath
(Don John of Austria rides homeward with a wreath.)
And he sees across a weary land a straggling road in Spain,
Up which a lean and foolish knight for ever rides in vain,
And he smiles, but not as Sultans smile, and settles back the blade....
(But Don John of Austria rides home from the Crusade.)

¿A qué le temen? / What are they afraid of?

Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the United Kingdom has brought out one of the most dangerous contradictions of Western secular society. While claiming to be tolerant to all, it is openly intolerant of Catholicism. In few countries has the secularization of the culture been so acute as it has been in England and the results of this corruptive process have been seen in the mass media and in the protests that have taken place in the streets of London. Many groups, which always demand tolerance for themselves, have gone out into the streets yelling things and holding up signs that are anything but tolerant. Though they have the right to disagree with the Pope and with the teachings of the Catholic Church and though they have the right to express that disagreement, they do not have the right to personally attack him or to prance around with images that are offensive not only to His Holiness, but to all the Catholic faithful.

A true meaning of tolerance implies respect for the person even while disagreeing with that person's ideas. The erroneous ideas are attacked, not the person who defends them. However, experience has taught us over and over again that when a belief is not rooted in Truth, it avoids any sort of questioning and debate and immediately tries to suppress its opponents. Discrediting the person becomes a goal because refuting his belief is, if this belief is true, impossible. In consequence, when individual opinions acquire greater importance than Truth, those who stand up for it are silenced by any means possible. This danger has always been clear to those capable of seeing beyond the surface of things. One of such men was Saint Thomas More. He did not bow before King Henry VIII's whim because it was a whim that was not in accordance with the Truth. For this he paid with his life. It is quite significant then, that His Holiness addressed the British Nation from Westminster Hall, the place where Saint Thomas More's trial took place. For those who see History as the unfolding of God's plan for mankind, there is something providential in the fact that the Pope is inviting the English people, and with them all peoples, to live in the Truth from the very spot where Thomas More was condemned to die for it.

So the question arises: why are militant secularists so eager to silence the Pope? If his words and those of all religious people are false and superstitious, like so many ardent atheists claim, then they will be incapable of withstanding any serious inquiry and will eventually disappear or become negligible. Maybe their hostility is due to the fact that Christianity has already been put to this test. For centuries it has been questioned and for centuries it has brought forth brilliant minds to defend it. Not small among these minds was that of Cardinal John Henry Newman, for whose beatification Pope Benedict has traveled to Britain. Many other men of similar intellectual stature and equally ardent love of the faith have come from the British Isles, such as Thomas More, G.K. Chesterton, Hillaire Belloc, C.S. Lewis or J.R.R. Tolkien. Any of them would have happily debated any atheist of the likes of Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens or Fernando Savater and would have given more than enough arguments witnessing to the truth of the Christian faith. Even more, they would have proven false the statement so dearly held by atheists that faith is unreasonable. Pope Benedict has talked about this during his visit: “I would suggest that the world of reason and the world of faith; the world of secular rationality and the world of religious belief, need one another and should not be afraid to enter into a profound and ongoing dialogue, for the good of our civilization.”

Many secularists seem to ignore this call to dialogue because they do not believe in dialogue. They prefer a monologue in which only their voice can be heard. To get rid of their opponents they make use of ridicule and offensive slurs, like what has been seen and heard in London and has been bombarded all over the world through television and the Internet. In that attitude they reflect an immense fear of listening to what the Pope has to say and an even greater fear of having others inquire about the validity of their beliefs. If they are so emphatically opposed to his presence in England, could it be because they somehow know, maybe unconsciously, that he is speaking the Truth? Could this be what they are so afraid of?

Sobre la redefinición del matrimonio (parte 3) / On the redefinition of marriage (part 3)

The movement in favor of homosexual unions has recently begun to equate itself with the Civil rights movement of the sixties. They claim that their fight for “equal rights” is very similar, if not of the same nature, than that of black people fighting for equality with white people. There are several profound differences between both movements that render that claim entirely false. White people in the United States actually did have more rights than black people. Segregation and other forms of discrimination because of the color of one’s skin were a real thing. It was something based entirely on an accidental (in the metaphysical sense of the word) attribute of human beings. That is, two individuals who possessed the same dignity were being treated as if they did not because of a secondary trait. With homosexual unions, it is completely different. Homosexuality cannot be equaled with the color of one’s skin and the reasons for that are quite obvious. Also, it is fallacious to sustain that homosexual persons have “fewer rights” than heterosexuals. Both homosexuals and heterosexuals do not have the right to marry someone of their same sex. Both have the right to marry someone of the opposite sex. There is no discrimination in the fact that homosexuals do not wish to exercise that right.

Therefore, the real struggle that homosexuals are fighting is not for equal rights (because they already have them), but for additional rights. They, of course, do not say this openly. It is more profitable to present themselves as victims than to admit wanting more than what everybody else has. We must denounce this from the very beginning so as not to fall into their trap of portraying whoever opposes them as insensitive to the weak. This is not the struggle of a weak group against the tyranny of the strong. The homosexual lobby is anything but weak. That is not, however, the issue I wish to address. The issue at hand is whether these new rights which homosexuals claim for themselves are rights at all. If they are so, then they should be accessible to every single person, not only to homosexuals.

To do this we must go back to the basic definitions. A right is something that belongs to a person or institution on the basis of justice. Justice means giving to each what is their due. Something that is often neglected is that rights also have limits to them precisely because of the same justice, that brought them into existence.  That is, they are limited because of what is due to other people’s dignity or to the common good of society. Rights cannot be seen without the responsibilities that they carry with them. The “right to marry” has the limits that enable he who exercises it to respect the dignity of the person and  to collaborate with the common good. It is also limited by the very nature of the marriage institution. We have seen before that marriage and homosexual unions are two distinct things. They cannot be considered equal because they are not equal. Doing so would go against justice. Marriage as an institution has a fundamental role in the common good of society and as such deserves a special protection. Altering it would imply an act of injustice that would affect not only the institution of marriage but also society. Since the role of the government is to protect the common good, it follows that it is its duty to defend marriage and avoid any action that could harm it.

With the good of society and the respect of others' dignity in mind, the right to marry has been limited in several ways. A man cannot be married to more than one woman at the same time; he cannot marry a minor or a close relative. The restriction that says that only people of the opposite sex can marry falls into this category of restrictions as well. The reason for its existence is the respect of human dignity.

However, many will argue that the right to marry anyone, regardless of their sex, is necessary in order to respect human dignity. This is false. It is false because human dignity itself must be founded on a true understanding of Man and an essential aspect of each individual is his or her sex. Reality proves to us that we are either male and female. It is not a question of whether a person “feels” like a man or “feels” like a woman. The differences between sexes are not a subjective thing, they are a concrete reality inscribed in our very bodies. A denial of this, which lies at the very core of the homosexual ideology, is simply a false doctrine. of what human beings are. False concepts of Man lead to the demand of false rights and this demand of non-existent rights is exactly what the homosexual ideology is based upon. Moreover, false doctrines inevitably lead to a corruption of social institutions and to a disregard for human dignity. The gravity of this particular ideology lies in the fact that it attacks the very nucleus of the family which is, in turn, the basic cell of society. It is like a cancer that by attacking the cells can destroy the entire body. This cancer is already in an advanced stage in the West. Hopefully, we will be able to eradicate it in time.

Sobre la redefinición del matrimonio (parte 2) / On the redefinition of marriage (part 2)

The second fallacy that we must deal with in the debate about the redefinition of marriage is one present in all discussions of serious moral issues. It is the fallacious conception of what the separation of Church and State should be. I should begin by stating that I do not want Church and State to be united again. That was extremely harmful for the Church, much more than it was for the State. The breaking down of Christendom during the Protestant Reformation was mainly due to the actions of many princes and kings who had absolute dominion over the Church in their lands. But that is a topic for some other time.

The separation of Church and State is no longer seen as a healthy separation of two distinct institutions, each of which has its own aims and which are supposed to work in collaboration. It is not even seen as a guarantee of religious freedom in societies where people of different faiths coexist. It is now used as a means of silencing believers. What we have seen in the current debate is really an act of intolerance against believers from those who demand tolerance for themselves. Wherever someone raises his voice against homosexual unions, he is immediately silenced by saying that that position is based on religious beliefs that should not be imposed on others, even while this minority is actively seeking to impose its views on everyone else. This has reached ridiculous proportions in Mexico, where the voicing of their opinions by bishops is treated, by pundits and politicians alike, as a threat to this almost sacred principle of separation. It is offensive to see so many politicians “defending the secular state” instead of working for the common good, which is what they are supposed to be doing. Priests and believers are being treated as second-class citizens, something which is clearly unconstitutional.

What is actually being implied here is that religious views have no place in society. It is being implied that religious beliefs have no content of truth in them. By some faulty reasoning, they sustain the idea that religious truths are not rational. This is clearly false and I have written about it before, as have done many brighter and more respectable minds. On this point, it is interesting to read what Jürgen Habermas (a German, non-Christian philosopher) has to say about it in The Dialectics of Secularization: “When secularized citizens act in their role as citizens of the state, they must not deny in principle that religious images of the world have the potential to express truth. Nor must they refuse their believing fellow citizens the right to make contributions in a religious language to public debates.” In An Awareness of what is Missing, he writes: “the liberal state must also expect its secular citizens, in exercising their role as citizens, not to treat religious expressions as simply irrational.” By rejecting the truths contained in religious teachings, we are abandoning centuries of human wisdom and experience. The narrow mind of our contemporaries does not allow them to see through the poetic language of religion and discover the truth that lies in it. With their militant secularism, they are robbing all society of these riches.

This rejection of religious language has not only impoverished the level of public debates, but it has collaborated in altering the meaning of the separation of Church and State even more. This separation has come to mean that religion is something limited to the private sphere, that should not be present outside of the temple or the home. Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver described it perfectly when differentiating between “freedom of worship” and “freedom of religion”. Freedom of religion “includes the right to preach, teach, assemble, organize, and to engage society and its issues publicly, both as individuals and joined together as communities of faith”, freedom of worship allows you to believe what you want as long as it is kept in private. The difference is evident.

By removing all references to religion in the public square, not only are believers being alienated, but the very core of our Western civilization is being destroyed. What we are witnessing today is not so much a separation of the Church and the State as it is a separation of the State and the culture. The values by which our societies have lived, grown and stayed together, our standards of right and wrong, our beliefs in what is true or untrue are all a product of this culture from which the State is now breaking away. In the West, this culture is a Christian culture. Once the State removes itself from the culture, it removes itself from those values and becomes the sole arbitrator of what is right and what is wrong, of what is true or untrue. Archbishop Chaput says: “A society where faith is prevented from vigorous public expression is a society that has fashioned the state into an idol. And when the state becomes an idol, men and women become the sacrificial offering.” And so, if the Supreme Court (based on ideology) votes that homosexual unions are the same thing as marriage then that becomes “truth”. Whoever opposes this is labeled as intolerant. How paradoxical it is that tolerance, the value that supporters of homosexual unions uphold as their banner, is the first Christian value that they dispose of once they have achieved their goal. I quote Archbishop Chaput once more: “The dogma of tolerance cannot tolerate the Church's belief that some ideas and behaviors should not be tolerated.” What Pope Benedict has called “the dictatorship of Relativism” is becoming more powerful by the day.

There is another fallacy which is used as a justification for homosexual unions being equated with marriage and in giving those unions the possibility of adopting children. It is the fallacy of declaring some things that are not rights, rights and, hence, considering any action against them as an act of repression. The only act of repression I see in the near future is the one the Church will have to suffer when the State decides to force it into celebrating the sacrament of marriage to homosexual couples. I know that many Christian sects will give in, the True Church will not.

Sobre la “redefinición” del matrimonio (parte 1) / On the “redefinition” of marriage (part 1)

Two events have taken place in the past week that have put the issue of the erroneously called homosexual marriages on the spotlight on both sides of the Mexican-American border. One is the recent vote in the Mexican Supreme Court declaring the constitutionality of homosexual unions; the other, is the repealing by a federal judge of Proposition 8, a proposition banning homosexual unions in the state of California and which was approved by popular vote.

This debate has brought forth several fallacies on which the whole homosexual ideology rests upon and if any serious discussion is to take place, they must first be addressed and taken out of the way. Since they are fallacious reasonings, they impede a truly rational debate to exist. Most defenders of traditional family and traditional values have failed in removing these obstacles and at times it seems like they are not even aware of them. They have allowed themselves to be pulled into a discussion where the meaning given to the terms used is not clear and where words are being manipulated in such a way that they make the defenders of homosexuality seem tolerant and rational and their opponents either crazy or stupid.

In order to explain why the redefinition of marriage is a fallacy, we must begin by clarifying what 'definition' means. The purpose of defining something is to state what that thing is. According to Aristotle, a definition consists of two parts: what we could call the “general category” (in Latin: genus proximus) to which the thing belongs to; and those characteristics that make it different from all the other things in that category (differentia specifica). Let me use the most common example, the definition of Man: man is a rational animal. Here, the general category is animal and what differentiates man from all other animals is the possession of reason. Defining is a discriminatory process in the sense of stating the differences between things. Without this discriminatory process, no rational thought is even possible. If all things are the same, then there is no possibility of reasoning. In this sense, saying that homosexual unions are different from marriage is discriminatory, but there is nothing wrong about it.

Basically, we can say that the whole point of defining something is to say what the thing is in reality, not what people want it to be, or what the majority decides it to be. This is done by distinguishing it from everything else. Therefore, a definition that does not correspond to reality is a false or incorrect definition, and a definition that fails to distinguish the thing defined from other things is a bad definition. The proposed “redefinition” of marriage is both a false and a bad definition. By giving the same name to two different things, it is making the term 'marriage' ambiguous, which is exactly the opposite of what a definition is meant to be.

In order to prove what I have just said, let us analyze the definition of marriage to see if homosexual unions can be defined in the same way or not. Both marriage and homosexual unions share a genus proximus, because they are both a form of human relationship. We can go further and accept that both of them are human relationships based on love since no one has ever denied that homosexual persons can love each other. But even this is still the genus proximus, as there are many kinds of human relationships based on love, many of which cannot be called marriage, take the relationship between brothers as an example. Up to this point we are yet lacking the differentia specifica for our definition.

Now, of all human relationships, there is one that exists to fulfill a basic necessity of mankind, that of the preservation of the species. This necessity, however, is not satisfied by mere reproduction, it also requires the protection and upbringing of children. The satisfaction of these needs demands a very specific form of relationship: a relationship of complementarity. This stems from the very obvious fact that reproduction can only take place between a man and a woman. The complementarity required for the raising of children is less evident, at least in appearance, but can be easily seen when one realizes that a man does not know (nor will he ever know) what it is like to be a woman. Therefore, he cannot teach a daughter how to be a woman as well as a woman would, nor can he teach a son many things about women that only a woman would know. The same principle applies for women with respect to men. This is something proven by experience and it is ridiculous to believe that scientific studies are needed to show such simple truth.

It turns out that it is exactly this relationship of complementarity that we call, and always have called, marriage. So now we have found the differentia specifica that we were looking for. Marriage is the human relationship of complementarity which enables us to form a family, the building block of society. In consequence, homosexual unions cannot be called marriage because they do not satisfy the differentia specifica, they are not relationships of complementarity. It does not matter how much two men or two women feel that they “were made for one another” or even how much they love each other, the fact that they share the same sex voids their relationship of this complementarity. Their very bodies deny it. This is something that either evolution, or random chance, or God, or whatever you want (for our purposes it does not matter who or what did it) has determined for us. It is not based on religious dogma but on the dogma of factual reality.

I have not had recourse to any Christian teachings in order to define marriage. I have only resorted to the doctrine of Aristotle (who lived many years before Christ), some common sense and logic to reach what is called the “traditional” definition of marriage. If the Catholic understanding of marriage coincides with the one I have offered it is because it is true and Revelation supports it by confirming it. Truth cannot contradict itself. Even when Christian principles are not used, a defense of marriage will be accused of being an imposition of religious views. In our so-called democratic societies (which are less democratic by the minute) this is considered an attack on the separation of Church and State. That is the second fallacy that I will deal with.
